Prospector training components may consist of coursework taken onsite at Epic, coursework completed online with Epic, and coursework completed onsite at Duke.  The specific classes needed will vary by requestor and depend upon the user’s experience with Epic and the type of data requested.  Training at Epic and certification through Epic can typically be completed within a single month but is dependent on both the Epic training schedule and the requestor’s availability. Most Epic training requires one or two onsite visits to the Epic training facility in Verona, WI.  As part of their participation in Prospector, requestor receives guidance regarding appropriate Epic coursework. Please note that Epic coursework do have associated financial cost.

In addition to formalized Epic training and certification, ACE provides new users with a general overview and orientation to the DHE enterprise data resources. During this orientation users are familiarized with the repository of Epic foundation and DHE-curated data sources (including cubes, datamarts, and universes), available BI toolsets (including SlicerDicer, Tableau, DEDUCE, and dynamic reports via SAP’s Web Intelligence tool). The participant will also be expected to present their use case in a structured presentation and complete a practicum as well as a standardized examination.

DHE sensitive and protected data—including financial class information, patient protected health information, and protected clinical notes data—are also covered in the training.  Standard approaches to designing SQL queries for typical use cases are presented, along with approved methods for versioning and documenting program code.  Training in the use of Duke’s PACE environment for research analysis of PHI is available as needed.  Note that an advanced level of proficiency and experience in writing SQL is a prerequisite for participation in Prospector.
